Spring Thaw to begin on WI State and US Highways - 12:01 a.m.Wednesday, 3/7/2012
It may seem contradictory to send notice of the declaration of Spring Thaw and permit suspensions due to a major winter storm on the same day but the road subgrades are in thaw and the storm will not cause them to freeze. Temperatures are expected to reach the 50's in central and southern WI by next week.
Starting AT 12:01 A.M. ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 2012, SPRING THAW IS IN EFFECT SOUTH OF WI HWY 8 IN WISCONSIN ZONES - 2, 3, 4 & 5 . Zone 1 is not in thaw. (Go to www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/truck/class2roads.htm for a map of these zones)
Declaration of Spring Thaw means that: 1) Permits with permit numbers beginning with AC, AG, MI, PB, and RF are suspended in in Zones 2 thru 5 until further notice. 2) Those permits beginning with GG that authorize transport of overweight divisible loads are also suspended until further notice. 3) Certain State and US highways become "Class II Roadway" limiting gross vehicle weight to 40 tons, or less if posted for less-than-legal weight. NOTE: Permits with permit numbers beginning with RS (98k/6 axles logging permit) and PS (90k/6 axles potatoes for seed permit) are not suspended.
Call (608) 266-7320 Monday thru Friday - 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. if you have questions about permit status.
