King pin settings and 53' trailers.

Illinois –

I just wanted to let all of you know if you already didn’t that on all 53’ trailers if the kingpin is over 45’6 on Class I, II, III, or other state highways that a permit is needed.  For example if a driver has a 53’ trailer and his kingpin is 49’3 a permit is needed (even empty).  I have attached the Illinois Max legal dims form.  You can go to http://www.gettingaroundillinois.com/gai.htm?mt=tpr to check on what class the roads are.  This only applies to trailers that are 53’ or over anything under that are exempt from the rule.

 

California –

If your trailer is longer than 48’, then the kingpin to the rear axle cannot exceed 40’.  Longer trailers are permitted only if they are stretched for a specific load.

 

Connecticut –

53’ Trailers are only legal on Interstates or Designated Highways if the kingpin to the center of the rear axle does not exceed 43’.  Kingpin does not matter on a single piece O/D load permit load but the 43’ maximum does apply on a multiple piece load, even when the extra pieces are legal sizes.  If you have a 53’ semi-trailer traveling without a permit and kingpin setting is over 43’ you can be fined.

 

Florida –

53’ Trailers must have kingpin setting of 41’ from center of kingpin to center of rear axle to be legal.

 

Tennessee –

50’ Kingpin to end of trailer is legal.

 

Vermont –

If overall length exceeds 75’ & the trailer is 53’ it must have kingpin setting of 41’ from center of kingpin to center of rear axle to be legal. 

 

Virginia –

53’ Trailers must have kingpin setting of 41’ from center of kingpin to center of rear axle to be legal.

 

Wisconsin –

If overall length exceeds 75’ & the trailer is 53’ it must have kingpin setting of 43’ from center of kingpin to center of rear axle to be legal.
